how to fix a flat plush

    october 5, 2026 · 3 min read

a flat plush is normally one of three things: fill that has migrated, fill that has been compressed by heat, or pile that has matted where it gets handled. each has a different fix.

    1. migrated fill

the easiest one. work the fill back into the thin areas with your fingers from the outside, pressing from the full parts toward the empty ones. a few minutes usually restores the shape.

    2. heat compressed fill

if a dryer was involved, the fibers have partly melted together. massaging helps a little, but a full recovery usually needs new fill. open a seam carefully, add polyester fiberfill in small handfuls, and hand stitch it closed.

    3. matted pile

the fabric looks flat even though the shape is fine. brush gently against the grain with a soft brush while the fabric is slightly damp, then let it air dry. do not use heat and do not pull.

    questions people ask

why did my plush go flat?

usually compressed fill from a dryer, or fill that has shifted away from the areas you hold most. shifted fill is easy to fix by hand; heat damage often needs new stuffing.

what stuffing should i use to refill a plush?

standard polyester fiberfill, added in small handfuls so it does not clump. add slowly and check the shape as you go.

every but cute has a quirk, and a yet.
